For many, it was the festival’s unwavering commitment to bold, independent South Asian storytelling. For others, it was simply the track record of the festival’s success. 🌍 Community, after all, plays a vital role. "What role does the community play in making this possible?" The answers? Everything. A film festival is not built alone — it is sustained by volunteers, audiences, artists, and belief.

At the heart of Here. Now. was a masterfully woven tapestry of multicultural voices. Led by the visionary Andrea Ariel, the evening unfolded like a journey through memory and meaning. Each piece in the program was a chapter—introspective, spirited, and often raw. The production’s strength lied not only in its dance and choreography but in its unflinching authenticity, embracing the multiplicity of identities and histories each performer brings. The opening piece, Presence, set the tone with grounded, breath-centered movement that immediately rooted the audience in the now. A vibrant tribute to growing up amidst eclectic cultural influences, the work was theAtrical and unapologetically personal blending movement, fashion, and vintage flair in a tribute to self-expression and identity formation. “Sunny” Shen’s Mirror of Origins brought the audience into a hauntingly beautiful duet that wrestled with cultural duality. Shen and Venese mirrored and resisted each other in a tension-filled dance of belonging and estrangement. This piece—delicate, forceful, and poetic—was a true emotional highlight. Luis Ordaz’s Feedback-Loop Interrupted, performed with Leopoldo Centeno, explored the sonic chaos of external expectations. The evening was an epitome of artistic brilliance, bringing together minds and souls passionate about the evolving landscape of contemporary Indian art. Neerja Peter’s works were the star of the show, praised for offering a fresh perspective on the contemporary Indian art scene. Her unique style, characterized by contemporary abstraction, portrays spirituality deeply rooted in Indian tradition. Her delicate drawings on rice paper in monochrome stood out for their intricate and sublime quality, captivating attendees with their ethereal beauty. Additionally, her monumental triptychs and large canvases, displayed on the grand walls of Bikaner House, commanded a majestic presence, leaving viewers in awe of her artistic prowess. Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt (BMBB) event was a unique partnership between the Jewish and Hindu communities in Austin. This family-friendly, cultural extravaganza organized by event partners Shalom Austin and HC4A, successfully united communities through a shared goal of making a significant difference. On April 21, this event was joined by the African American Youth Harvest Foundation reflecting the diverse fabric of Austin. This year’s initiative focused on supporting over 1,600 children to provide essential school supplies. Jewish, Hindu, and African American communities shared the stage at the BMBB event showcasing how diverse cultures can come together for a common purpose. The fundraising segment included powerful stories from individuals whose lives have been dramatically changed through acts of generosity and service. Following this powerful start, a local family, beneficiaries of the school supplies drive coordinated by Hindu Charities for America (HC4A), took the stage.
